Driver License Tests

The partners of arge tp 21 are: TÜV NORD Mobilität GmbH & Co. KG, TÜV Kraftfahrt GmbH, TÜV Rheinland Group, TÜV SÜD Auto Service GmbH, and DEKRA Automobil GmbH.

Project Task: Most notably new drivers bear a particularly high risk of accidents. This risk was to be decreased by improving the driver license written tests. In cooperation with the work group TÜV | DEKRA (arge tp 21, Dresden) an application was to be developed for 3D computer visualization within driver license written tests. The content of the new exam questions was to tackle common deficits that are relevant to car accidcents of new drivers. In particular that includes the assessment of situations and and recognition of danger. The requirement was to display such traffic situations in different variations and to let the computer generate them randomly.

Project Goal: Vicom software aims at improving diversified contents for driver license written tests and thereby at increasing the quality of the training and lessons for future drivers. The intention is to decrease the overall number of accidents, especially in the case of new drivers. Moreover, visuals should help retaining actual knowledge of new drivers.

Solution: The goal was approached by using a leading 3D engine. This tool provides photorealistic simulations of traffic situations in 3D. A new software application was developed from the ground up with which authors can create and reproduce specific situations for the tests. By using variations of different objects in the scenery, you can avoid repetition and thus reduce the chance of a situation being recognized again. Various weather conditions and the display of the seasons (such as rain, fog, snow, day and night) make it possible to simulate the same scene under different circumstances.
